The British Library now has an iPad App

British Library treasures HD is the new British Library iPad app. Treasures of Word in the title of the app is apt, as the British Library houses literally millions of documents that represent significant portions of the history of the world. He holds more than 150 million items in total.

We hold 14 million books, journal titles and journal 920,000, 58 million patents, 3 million sound recordings, and so much more...

The application includes more than 100 highlights from our collections, including focusing on music and scientific - literary, historical documents alongside illuminated manuscripts and sacred texts. Each is presented with images high resolution, which allows the Viewer to zoom in and explore in extraordinary detail.

Salient facts literary includes draft manuscript of Charles Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby and Jane Austen teenage written, while historical documents include key 2000 years Oracle bones from China, an original Magna Carta of 1215, Elizabeth I Tilbury speech famous before the Spanish Armada and Christabel Pankhurst suffragette registration address after his release from prison.

The music section includes scores of manuscript of some of the most famous classical composers such as Handel, Purcell, Mozart and Schubert, alongside calypso and traditional folk music. A section dedicated to cards showcases some of the most interesting and most beautiful maps and views of the collection.

This app probably does offer lots of bells or whistles, but if you are a history buff should be one that grabs your attention.
